Erbil International Airport Director Talar Faiq confirmed on Friday that the ban on Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports will end before the end of this year, while the size of the loss has exceeded 30 million dollars due to the ban.
“There are international attempts to persuade Baghdad to lift the ban on Kurdistan because of the referendum on independence,” Fayek said in a press statement.
“The ban on Erbil and Sulaymaniyah airports will continue until December 29,” she said.
“The loss exceeded 30 million dollars because of the ban imposed by the Civil Aviation Authority on flights in the region,” noting that “Iraq was also affected by the closure of the airports, while” air trade in Iraq has decreased by 25% because passengers are traveling through Turkey “He said.
The Iraqi government took a series of punitive measures on the Kurdistan region in September, including the imposition of an air embargo on the airports of Arbil and Sulaymaniyah two days after the referendum on the Kurdistan region on 25 September last.
